Make sure you have a small amount of outstanding debts, make sure you stay within your financial means, don't fall in love with the first house you see, give yourself 6 months of research before you purchase ans pre qualify for a loan ( it gives you purchase power).

You must also watch out that you don't have some major spending to be made in near future.I think the financial implications are the most important factor as well as one must know,what kind of accommodation one is looking for.

A house is a major investment and commitment for life so one must be very careful and doing all the necesary homwork on the house and mortgage  but also any aspects of financial planning such as income stream and expenditure.

I think in addition to all of these answers, you should also be MENTALLY ready for the move. Not only should you know you are ready to purchase you should be prepared for what comes along WITH the purchase.. Moving, unpacking etc.. Timing can be essential!
